Alstom Ireland Ltd

Alstom Ireland Ltd

Sector:  Energy - Power generation and transport

Alstom Ireland is the Irish branch of the multinational group Alstom which is based in Paris and has offices in seventy countries worldwide.

Alstom is a global leader in the world of power generation and rail infrastructure and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. Alstom builds the fastest train and the highest capacity automated metro in the world, and provides turnkey integrated power plant solutions and associated services for a wide variety of energy sources, including hydro, gas and coal. The Group employs 80,000 people in 70 countries, and had orders of over €24 billion in 2008.

Alstom can trace its origins back to many of Europe’s best known engineering companies. Companies such as ASEA, Brown Boveri, English Electric, GEC, CEM and ABB have combined to form the Alstom of today.

Alstom’s current activities in Ireland are in the Transport and Power Generation businesses. Though only registered here as a limited company in 2002, Alstom has had a long association with Ireland stretching back to the forties with the supply of hydro power plants to ESB. Transport arrived in the eighties with the supply of first Dart trains to CIE.

Today, in Transport, Alstom is the supplier of the Citidas trams that have become the symbol of the Dublin’s LUAS system and perhaps of the city itself. Alstom has recently delivered 26 additional trams to cater for the extensions of the network to Cherrywood, the Point Depot and Citywest, giving a total of 66 Citadis trams in service on the LUAS Network in Dublin. Alstom also provide all the services required to maintain both the LUAS trams and the tramway infrastructure.

In Powe Generation, Alstom has long been a major supplier to the industry here and in 2010 completed the construction and commissioning of Ireland’s cleanest and most efficient gas fired combined cycle power plant for ESB in Aghada, Co. Cork.
